Bangkok: A Family-Friendly Start to Our Thai Adventure
We began our journey in Bangkok, Thailand’s vibrant capital. As backpackers we spent a lot of time in Bangkok and thought it would be fun to share this vibrant, fun city with our daughter.

Family Activities in Bangkok
Bangkok may be busy and loud, but it’s surprisingly family-friendly. Here are some highlights of our time in the city:
- Tuk Tuk Ride: Zipping through Bangkok’s streets in a tuk tuk was a thrill for our daughter and a fun way to see the city at night.
- The Giant Golden Buddha (Wat Traimit): An awe-inspiring sight, especially for kids who may be seeing such grandeur for the first time.
- Lumphini Park: A peaceful escape right in the city. We loved walking among the giant monitor lizards, which fascinated our daughter!
- Bangkok Temples: No trip to Bangkok is complete without visiting its most famous temples. We explored Wat Pho, home of the Reclining Buddha, and Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Both were breathtaking and a great opportunity to introduce our child to Thailand’s culture and history.
- Thai Outfits and Photos: Renting authentic Thai outfits and taking family photos around the temples was one of our favorite experiences—it gave us beautiful memories to treasure.
- The floating markets around Bangkok is an excellent day trip.
Thai Islands: Paradise for Families
After Bangkok, we headed south to explore Thailand’s stunning islands. Known for their powder-soft sand, clear water, and affordable resorts, these islands are truly paradise.
Koh Ngai: Relaxation at Paradise Beach Resort
We spent a full week on Koh Ngai, staying at the aptly named Paradise Beach Resort. Located on the quieter, more secluded side of the island, it felt wonderfully private—exactly what we wanted for a relaxing family holiday. The beach was calm, the atmosphere peaceful, and we often felt like we had our own little piece of paradise.
The resort itself had everything we needed: comfortable bungalows, a swimming pool with sea views, hammocks strung between palm trees, and a beachfront restaurant serving tasty Thai and Western dishes. The staff were attentive and friendly, and one of the things we appreciated most was how family-oriented the atmosphere was.
Medical care on Koh Ngai
Our daughter wasn’t feeling well during our stay, and the hotel staff kindly arranged for us to contact a doctor located on the busier side of the island. It gave us peace of mind to know that medical support was available, even though we were in a remote, tropical setting.
Snorkeling and Water Activities in Koh Ngai
The beachfront snorkeling was safe and easy, perfect for families with younger children. The shallow, crystal-clear water revealed small coral patches, schools of tropical fish, and even the occasional starfish. Some days, however, there were many jellyfish, which made the sea less inviting. On those days, the resort pool was a welcome alternative.
For families or couples wanting more adventure, boat snorkeling and scuba diving trips are available from the other side of the island. Many resorts and dive shops organize half-day or full-day trips to nearby reefs, offering chances to spot larger schools of fish, colorful coral gardens, and sometimes turtles.
Koh Lipe: Family Fun and Diving Adventures
Our next stop was Koh Lipe, where we stayed for a week at Kathale Beach Resort on Maricilla Beach. This lovely 4-star hotel offered great value for money, with spacious family rooms and a breakfast buffet right by the beach. We loved waking up to the sound of the waves and having the sand at our doorstep.
Maricilla Beach was filled with families, and our daughter quickly made friends to play and swim with. The highlight for us was being able to relax at On the Rocks Restaurant, enjoying fresh Thai food while watching our daughter build sandcastles just a few meters away.
Diving in Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is also one of Thailand’s best diving spots. I booked diving with Castaway Divers, and it was an unforgettable experience.
- Water Temperature: A very comfortable 28–30°C (82–86°F), so no wetsuit was really needed, just a thin shorty for comfort.
- Visibility: Consistently excellent, ranging between 15–20 meters, allowing us to see vibrant reef life in stunning clarity.
The reefs around Koh Lipe are full of life and color. On my dives, I spotted:
- Parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish darting among the coral.
- Clownfish hiding in sea anemones (a big hit with kids on snorkeling trips).
- Moray eels peeking out from rocky crevices.
- Nudibranchs in dazzling colors, small but incredibly beautiful.
- Schools of barracuda and groups of yellowtail snapper swirling around the reefs.
The dive sites here are varied—some with gentle sandy bottoms for beginners, and others with dramatic reefs and boulders for more experienced divers.
While we weren’t lucky enough to see one, whale sharks are sometimes spotted in the area between November and May, especially at deeper dive sites. Their presence is widely advertised, and many divers travel here in hopes of an encounter. Even without them, the diving was spectacular and very affordable—two dives cost 3,000 THB (around 82 USD).
For non-divers, there are also plenty of snorkeling trips available directly from the beach or by longtail boat. Many families we met enjoyed half-day trips to nearby reefs, where even children could see colorful fish in shallow water.
From Koh Lipe to Langkawi, Malaysia
After our week in Koh Lipe, we took a ferry south to Langkawi, Malaysia. It was a smooth trip and a great way to combine two countries in one holiday.
We stayed at The Bayview Hotel, which turned out to be a fantastic option—modern, comfortable, and very affordable. To make the most of our stay, we hired a taxi driver for a full-day tour around the island.
Highlights of Langkawi with Kids
We shared a minibus taxi for a day with friends we made on the ferry from Thailand and had a fantastic, very affordable day exploring Langkawi.
- Langkawi Sky Bridge & Cable Car: Amazing views over the island—kids will love the cable car ride.
- Eagle Square (Dataran Lang): A giant eagle statue, perfect for family photos.
- Pantai Cenang Beach: Soft sand and plenty of family-friendly restaurants.
- Langkawi Wildlife Park: A great stop for kids to interact with animals.
Singapore Stopover
From Langkawi, we caught a short flight to Singapore, where we wrapped up our holiday.
Travelling with a three-year-old can be unpredictable, but Singapore turned out to be the perfect destination for a young family — safe, clean, easy to navigate, and packed with activities that kept our little explorer happily busy from morning till night.
We based ourselves at Ascott’s Raffles Place, right in the heart of the city, in a beautiful apartment hotel that offered the perfect mix of comfort and convenience. The serviced apartment had a small kitchen, which was fantastic, since we prefer to cook some meals for ourselves. Best of all, we could walk from the hotel with the stroller and everything was close-by.
Visiting the Gardens by the Bay, our daughter was mesmerised by the colourful Supertrees and the Cloud Forest’s misty waterfall. She loved splashing around at the Children’s Garden water play area. At Sentosa Island, we rode the cable car, built sandcastles on the beach, and the massive ocean tank in the aquarium is incredible. Even simple things — like feeding koi fish at the Botanic Gardens or spotting parrots at the Jurong Bird Park — became magical moments.
