Growing up near Cape Town I know the Overberg well having spent countless weekends exploring the mountains and ocean of this beautiful area located between Cape Town and The Garden Route. Our recent weekend breakaway was a perfect combination of fun, action and relaxing at the Arabella Hotel & Spa on the Bot River near Kleinmond. We were on a mission, to have a strongweekend; enjoy the luxury of this beautiful 5 Star hotel, but also really use their adventure desk to help us maximize the adventure in the spectacular surroundings.

Explore the estate on a nine-bot (segway) was an awesome way to take in the beautiful suroundings! The hotel nine-bot operators take you on an hour long tour, racing along the Bot river estuary on these modern little two wheel platforms amid the rich bird life and Fynbos of the reserve.

Things to do in Hermanus
The location of the estate near the mountain and the ocean in a premium wine area lends itself to a plethora of exciting activities around Arabella. The hotel has an adventure desk set up to organize these activities for guests and transport can be arranged.
Our quadbiking adventure in the Hemel en Aarde Valley was really something special. It was Alya’s first time on one of these four wheel beasts and after a couple of minutes the smile on her face looked like it was there to stay! Quad biking through the vineyards, the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and up hill to a breath-taking look-out point of the bay was exhilarating!
Do not miss the opportunity to go wine tasting when you are in the Hemel en Aarde Valley! The area is home to some world famous wine estates producing the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines in South Africa. We did a self-drive wine tour in the beautiful valley. There are many excellent farms located on the R320 winding through this wine route. Our favorites were Bouchard Finalayson, Hamilton Russel and Ataraxia, you are guaranteed to go home with a couple of bottles of excellent wine! The hotel can organize a wine tour or on site tasting. Combine these two activities to do a guided wine tour on quad bikes!
There is a huge variety of other activities that the adventure desk can organize for you when staying in the hotel; ziplining, horse riding, an eco bay cruise, paintball, sea kayaking, whale watching, sandboarding, shark cage diving and a visit to Aquila game reserve.
Arabella Hotel – our room
Our room was perfect for relaxing after a busy day on the estate! Spacious, with a nice balcony and great view of the golf course and the mountains, it was close to the spa which was good when walking back to our room wearing gowns. Good quality wifi made keeping an eye on our blog easy. Our favorite thing about the room was our super comfortable bed, no better way to end an amazing day!
Food and Beverage Facilities
The Arabella Hotel and Spa has a variety of bars and restaurants catering for every pallet with great views of the cascading swimming pool and stunning golf course. We loved the chocolate cake served by the Lagoona Lounge when we had an afternoon coffee break!
Dinner and breakfast served at the Jamani Restaurant is top quality cuisine served in a relaxed restaurant with great views. For dinner you have a choice of the varied buffet of excellent South African cuisine and the elegant a la carte menu for an upmarket dining experience. We enjoyed some great wines made in the area with dinner. Breakfast is always my favorite meal staying at hotels and the Jamani breakfast buffet did not disappoint. The selection was great and I loved enjoying another cup of coffee on the balcony with the fantastic view of the pool.
Our breakaway weekend at Arabella was excellent; adventure, fun, beautiful cuisine and some pampering.
